Tooth abscess or dental abscess is a buildup of pus inside the gums or teeth. It is caused by a bacterial infection. Plaque buildup also causes bacterial growth and this in turn effects the health of your teeth and gums and damage them. If the plaque is not removed regularly or you don’t follow effective dental cleaning regime, the bacteria may spread in the soft tissue inside the gums or tooth, eventually resulting in an abscess.

Only a dentist can treat a tooth abscess. Treatment may include typical dental procedure like cleaning and in some severe cases surgery.
In case of patients with a periapical abscess and returning infection, surgery is recommended in order to remove the disease tissue completely.
In case of patients with a periodontal abscess and returning infection, gum tissues have to be reshaped and the periodontal pocket removed.
If the dental abscess reappears even after the surgery, the tooth may be removed.
